10 Facts of Christmas

Wednesday Jan 07, 2009

Wednesday Jan 07, 2009

Hello everyone and welcome to Your Educational Podcast.  I am your host, Dr. Anthony and today's podcast is titled ten facts of Christmas. let us begin with
number one: The song "Jingle bells" was first recorded for the Thanksgiving holiday, but later it became associated with many other well-known Christmas songs, such as The Twelve Days of Christmas, Little Drummer Boy, Let It Snow, Silver Bells, I'll be Home for Christmas, and Frosty the Snowman.
Next up is number two: The song silent night was written by an Australian priest. A day before Christmas day he was told that the Christmas organ was broken.
Not only was this upsetting to the priest, he now needed to come up with some music that would be appropriate with guitars and a singing choir.  So he wrote silent night in a matter of hours.
Number three: in 1939 Montgomery Ward department stores, commissioned Robert May, to write and create a Christmas book. That gave birth to Rudolph the red nosed reindeer, and 2.4 million free copies were handed out to children that year.
Number four: the Scandinavians were credited for bringing us kissing under the mistletoe.  It was believed that kissing under the mistletoe would bring good luck and happiness for the following year.  I don't know how effective that is, but it is sure is fun to do.
Number five: many people don't know the names of Santa's reindeer's.  So here it is: Dasher, Dancer, Blitzen, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, and Rudolph.
Number six: Did you know that there was a town called Christmas in the USA? And not only that, there are eleven towns called Santa Claus in eight US states.
Number seven: Coca-Cola was the first beverage company to use Santa Claus for a holiday promotion. Coca Cola also is also responsible for how Santa Claus looks in his outfit.
Number eight: Christmas trees take an average of seven to ten years to grow to maturity. For every Christmas tree that is cut down, 2 or 3 seedlings are planted in its place.
Number nine: According to Hallmark Company, Christmas is the largest card sending holiday in the United States. 2.1 billion cards are standout to friends and family throughout the holiday season. Now our US Postal service should be acknowledge for their hard work at delivering all that holiday cheer.
Number ten: the Candy cane was created by a candy maker who wanted to spread the word of Jesus.  The white symbolizes purity.  The."J" shape symbolizes the name of Jesus.
Finally the red color symbolizes the blood that was shed by Christ on the cross.
I would to say Merry Christmas to all my students, friends, and family. Stay tune for further podcasts on our site. This Dr. Anthony ...signing off.....
